My work is an attempt to answer questions about spatial relationships: between the interior and exterior of the body, between our perception of space and our occupation of it. The dynamics of the body, the way gaining and losing weight, is a form of making and process. I am intrigued by our culture’s obsession with dieting in order to build the perfect “sculpture”. Examining how the body fits into its skin, how our skin holds the body together, its folds, curves and edges.

Castings are used as evidence of the space the body defined for a moment; they show a passage through time. Using the space around the body I can maneuver through a private area unnoticed by culture. They are the last private areas of the body. The “space between,” such as The Space Between My Two Big Toes and The Space Under My Toes deny the erotic and focus on a visceral and instinctive reaction. By using fragments of ephemeral material and insignificant moments, I transform these forms into objects of monumental status. In sighting the memory of mud squishing through the toes, or the shape that a piece of gum becomes while its chewed. Using delicate material, of transitory form, the viewer is aware of the fluidity of the body, the ephemerality of time and the fragility of matter.
